How to Get Your SMS OTP When Traveling Abroad!

Travel Tips about 3 min read

Hey guys! One of the most annoying things when traveling abroad is trying to log into your bank app, transfer money, or pay for a booking, and boom… the screen says: “Please enter the OTP sent to your phone.”

And you’re just standing there thinking, “But I already changed to a travel SIM!”

Don’t worry, I’ve been there! Today, I’m going to share some super easy tricks to make sure you keep receiving those important SMS OTPs no matter where you are in the world. Let’s dive in!

1. Turn on International Roaming (The Easiest Way)

Honestly, the easiest way is to just keep your home SIM card in your phone. You don’t need to buy an expensive international data package. Just call your mobile provider before you fly and ask them to enable “International Roaming” for receiving calls and SMS.

  • Pro Tip: Receiving an SMS abroad is usually 100% FREE! Just make absolutely sure you turn off “Cellular Data” for your home SIM in your phone settings so you don’t get a massive shock on your next phone bill!

2. Wi-Fi Calling (A Total Lifesaver)

What if your hotel room is in a dead zone with zero signal? This is where “Wi-Fi Calling” (or VoLTE / VoWiFi) saves the day.

Just go into your phone settings and turn on Wi-Fi Calling before your trip. When you connect to the hotel, cafe, or airport Wi-Fi, your phone will act like it’s back home. You can receive SMS and even make calls at your normal local rate. It’s basically magic!

3. The Dual SIM or E-SIM Combo (Highly Recommended)

If your phone supports Dual SIM or E-SIM, you’re in luck. The best setup is to buy a cheap local SIM or a travel E-SIM for your internet data, and keep your home SIM active in the background just for receiving SMS.

  • How to set it up: Go to settings -> Set your “Mobile Data” to use the travel SIM. Then, set your “Default Voice/SMS Line” to your home SIM. Now you have cheap internet AND your banking OTPs! Problem solved.

4. Switch to Authenticator Apps (Skip the SMS entirely!)

Whenever possible, try to ditch SMS OTPs. For apps like Google, Facebook, or crypto wallets, switch to an Authenticator app (like Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator). It generates the security codes offline, meaning you don’t need a phone signal or Wi-Fi at all. Super handy!

5. Check Your Bank’s App Settings

Some modern banks are finally getting smarter. Instead of sending an SMS, they allow you to receive OTPs via email or directly through Push Notifications inside their banking app. Take a quick look at your bank’s security settings before you head to the airport.

Quick Checklist Before You Fly:

  1. Turn on International Roaming with your provider.
  2. If you use a prepaid SIM, top it up so it doesn’t expire while you’re away.
  3. Turn on Wi-Fi Calling and test it at home.
  4. Pack a SIM ejector pin (you always need one when you don’t have it!).

So there you have it! A few simple ways to make sure you never miss an OTP again while exploring the world. Have a great trip, stay safe, and eat lots of good food!
